$12 per month feeds a Family
I was watching TV late on night and they were people to send money saying it took $12 a month to feede a family.
So I'm wondering what the heck can you feed people for $12 a month. Seriously I spend $5.37 on lunch and $3.30 on sodas at work each day. What the heck is so cheap? E-A |

Simple. You're drinking Pepsi they're drinking Americola. Seriously you know what they're eating. Lots of pasta and soup.

They keep $10 for "admin costs" and feed the people bread and water with the other $2.

Having the luxury of coming home for lunch and eating leftovers, my average lunch cost is around a buck.

Re: $12 per month feeds a Family
Yeah, probably watered down soup and various grain products like oatmeal, etc. Probably not the same food grade as here in the US (cutting out the cost of inspection probably saves a bunch of $$). Bought in WalMart quantities.
As for my lunch, I'm still eating that Hickory Farms stuff from back in January. That and a 12 for $2.50 store brand soda. Aside from the $0.21 for the soft drink, I probably won't spend another nickel on lunch until about 2011.... |

If it was some third-world country, and they were mainly buying grain in bulk, I could see that it might be workable (assuming a "family" is only four people, which is another question...). Lots of grains would keep yo from starving, but you wouldn't exactly grow fat on the stuff either. And food prices in many third-world countries are depressed anyway due to imports donated by wealthier countries. -end- |

I always get a kick out of what the proprietors of the Chinese restaurants eat.
You order a huge plate of fried rice, or Moo Shoo Pork, what have you, laden with tons of meat and greens, way over the top good stuff. Then you see one of the waiters sit down and enjoy his dinner. It's almost a WHOLE POUND and a HALF of white steamed rice, with a tiny tiny slice of fish or meat of some kind on the top. God I don't know how they do that without getting all plugged up myself. But it's got to be in the under .25 category if I were to wager. |

Actually this is outdated. The cost is now up to 8 cents. |

A certain local grocery store chain advertises, spend $25 on Con-Agra products and get $10 coupon on your next shopping trip. Let's say Health choice soup is 2.79 but on sale for $1 a can. The best part is that the $25 is on pre-sale prices, so you buy 9 cans of heathly choice and add in 4 .50/2 coupon that doubles you get $9 - $4(.50/2 coupons doubled) = $5 out of pocket expense but you get $10 back. Thus, you have made a $5 profit. Now you "recycle" the $10 coupon. Buy the same soup (use the same coupons) and an additional $5 worth of items and use the previous $10 coupon and get another coupon $10 back (triggered by the soup you just bought). Recycle as many times there are product on the shelves or until the front end manger get jealous over your deals and asks you to leave (LOL). I have been able to net a profit of $90 on the last conagra deal, and I either buy gift cards or other grocery store items. Sometimes, I just buy the stuff to make the profit on it and donate it to the church and/or food shelter. Truthfully, I am only a small timer compared to some shoppers who have been reported getting $900 profit doing deals like these. If you dont have grocery stores who run deals like these and dont double coupons, then it is harder to get these type of savings. |
Re: $12 per month feeds a Family
OP, I always thought that was kinda weird, too. I wanted to write them and say,
"Dear Charitable Organization, Heck, I'll give ya $36 a month. Feed a starving kid, me, and my wife. Sincerely, RK" |
